Assessment Project: Design Thinking Process
Description: To begin this project, you will need to select a product or service for a business idea. While testing with users is essential for Design Thinking and for the Lean Startup Methodology. The most important thing for the 2nd Team project is that you are able to think through how to turn an idea into a business model and that you can design tests for your business model.
This is an extension of your first group project, Design Thinking in Practice 3a. You will finish the Design Thinking process through the prototyping phase. You can continue working on your concept from the first group project (3a) or explore a new business idea (Our new situation is ripe for innovative solutions!)
1. Business Model Canvas (BMC) -
For this assignment, your team will describe and design their business model using nine building blocks with pertinent details within a Business Model Canvas template.
The nine building blocks are:
Customer Segments
Key resources required to generate value
Value proposition for each customer segment
Key activities required to generate value
Channels to reach customers
Key partners
Customer relationship establishment
Cost structure of the business model
Revenue stream generation
2. Design Thinking Process
This team report should reflect building hypotheses about your business model and creating tests to prove whether your hypotheses are correct.
Your team will need to work on collaborative document (Google Docs or Word App in Office 365). The final report will be submitted to Moodle (unless otherwise specified by your instructor). As always, you are encouraged to apply the ethos of SUCCES and the principles of good design to create a report based on the following:
This report will include documentation of the following:
1. Create at least 1 hypothesis per member of the group (3 - 5 depending on your group size). Click the link to reference the chapter on Building Hypotheses from Testing Business Ideas.
2. Design at least 1 experiment per member of the group to test the hypothesis (3 - 5 depending on your group size) to test your hypothesis about a portion of your Business Model Canvas. These experiments should test the different elements of the Business Model Canvas. All of the tests you design will be physically created for Assessment 4a - Engineering Prototype.
a. Click the links from Testing Business Ideas:
i. Designing Experiments
ii. Experiment Selection
iii. Ideas for discovery experiments
iv. Ideas for validation experiments
3. Images of the prototypes you created that would be used to carry out the tests (1 prototype for each member of the group)
3. Engineering Design Prototype (model/concept)
For this assignment, your team will build prototypes of the experiments you designed in assessment 3b. Each group member is responsible for building 1 prototype (3 - 5 depending on your group size) that would allow your team to test their hypotheses about their business model (we will not actually conduct the tests).
To share your prototypes, you will need to create a video together explaining the prototypes and how they allow you to test your hypotheses. (Your video should be 25 min maximum).
Each group member will be responsible for building, demonstrating, and recording their section of the video. As a team, you need to edit it together into a cohesive product. You will upload the video into a cloud service of your choosing (Drive, Box, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc) and submit the link to Moodle (unless otherwise specified by your instructor).
Your video will include the following:
1. Brief introduction (4 min)
a. Team information
b. What's the problem your product is solving
c. Brief description of the the business model
2. Demonstration of prototypes 1 - 5 (depending on # of group members) (3 min each)
a. Hypothesis being tested
b. Description of the prototype and how it tests the hypothesis
3. Conclusion (2 min)
a. Brief summary of how all the particular combination tests will help you reduce risk.
