Assessment: The Business Placement Dissertation Executive Summary

Learning outcome 1: Demonstrate the following knowledge and understanding
• A deep and systematic understanding and critical appreciation of a selected specialist area from within the MBA toolkit and through engagement with a work placement, demonstrate the ability to challenge existing preconceptions and develop positive and enquiring approaches to management and enterprise relating to issues at the forefront of research into professional practice.

Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate the following skills and abilities
• Independently design and undertake a rigorous and substantial investigation into an aspect of the leadership and management of a placement organisation and develop an applied and specific set of interventions, including resourcing and implementation planning that seeks to enhance organisational performance and address change management considerations.

Your final assessment will be an individual business placement dissertation Executive Summary based on your work at the placement organisation, which will be a considered and comprehensive response to your research objectives agreed with your supervisor.

Your Executive Summary is a concise explanation of your dissertation that includes:

1. A definition of topic area
2. A summation of the business placement dissertation results and outcomes
3. A reflection on the placement process and a recommendation on how you would do it differently

While on retake you are asked to submit staged drafts of your dissertation. These submissions must be included as Appendices in the final submission of the 2nd assessment in Week 14 in order for consideration of the Executive Summary.

Please ensure you provide satisfactory evidence for primary research including the details of data collection process, data collection tools, and raw data. Lack of evidence for primary research would result in potential academic offense.

An Executive Summary is a concise summary of the placement project including:

• Problem or Opportunity in Context
• Relevance of contemporary academic theory, frameworks, models and debate
• Integration of theory and practice
• Critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis
• Research methods, analysis and findings (outcomes)
• How might this contribute to contemporary literature?
• How might this provide guidance to the placement organisationto enhance performance
• Reflection on the placement process and a recommendation on how you would do it differently
• Reflection on your personal and professional development and employability
• You might refer to the staged submissions in the Appendices but do not copy these
• Directly address the Learning Outcomes and threshold expectations (see above)
• Understand how your work will be evaluated (See Marks and Feedback below)

How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?

• The three staged submissions (Appendices) combine to demonstrate your understanding of the integration of contemporary academic theory, models and debate with practice in the placement organisation.
• Your dissertation will encapsulate your approach to the research and the research methods that you have deployed in analyzing your findings from the investigative process
• Your dissertation will comprise a number of integrative elements all of which will contribute to the achievement of the learning outcomes for this unit.
• It will need to address not only the contribution to the contemporary literature but also give direction and guidance to the placement organisation as to how this application of theory to practice might enhance organisational performance.
• The assessment will provide you with a point to reflect, and critically consider aspects of your programme to build a major academic study thereby helping you to make connections between emerging theory and practice, and reflection on your personal development as a consequence of this research project experience.
