Learning Activity - Privacy Rights vs Criminal Justice
There has been much debate on whether and to what extent the governments can compel mobile phone manufacturers to assist in unlocking cell phones (e.g. the FBI-Apple encryption dispute). With the advancement of technology, there has been an ever-increasing tension between the two values we all treasure - privacy and safety. Suppose you are a programmer who is responsible for designing the authentication component on a mobile phone. You now have two choices:
Option 1: design and implement an authentication component on the phone so that no one but the owner can unlock the phone.
Option 2: design and implement a "back door" in the authentication component to allow the government to unlock a phone if they are permitted to do so under the law for criminal investigation.
Privacy rights and criminal justice? Which one you would choose?
Write a short essay of no more than 300 words to explain and argue your position in this matter. Post your writing on Module 2.2 Privacy rights vs criminal justice discussion forum. Read and debate other students' answers. If you do not agree with their views, point out their logical flaws and provide constructive comments on their writings.
Write a direct and concise thesis statement, which will become the solution to the problem that you will argue or prove in the Week 5 Final Paper.
