Case Study
In this case study, you will design and build a small database application, using Microsoft Access.
Step 1 - In Word, identify a potential database application. It should be based on data you understand well, such as student data (refer to text), a hobby (see Lesson 8), or a set of data you use on the job. When you have made your choice, proceed to Step 2.
Step 2 - In Word, introduce your application and explain whether it is based on the example in the text, a hobby, or your job. Also explain how you came to understand the data, and provide detail on the uses for this database.
Step 3 - In Word, design two tables (more if you like) that might be part of the database, without normalization (i.e., they should contain fields that might make sense one table at a time, but that will cause problems with data redundancy and referential integrity. Your tables must each contain at least 5 fields (columns) and 5 records (rows).
Step 4 - In Word, explain why the tables above are not ideal for database applications (i.e., explain what problems with data redundancy and referential integrity they would cause). This has been explained in Lesson 8, but you are welcome to research the subject on the Web to add to your knowledge. Ensure sources are referenced correctly.
Step 5 - In Word, explain what tables you plan to build in Access. Normalization procedure explicitly documented. Identify what the primary key will be for each table. Identify what the foreign keys will be for each table. Explain what your query(s) are intended to show, and why it (they) would be useful. Conclude by summarizing the benefits that can be obtained by replacing the above tables with a well-designed database.
If you have made mistakes in this part, the next steps will be impossible.
Step 6 - In Access, build a database of at least 2 tables, showing good database design as discussed in Lesson 8. Use relationships to join the tables and then prepare a Query that will show meaningful results, using fields from both tables. Add a form that would be used for data entry. Provide meaningful sample data.
Step 7 - Submit BOTH your completed Access Database and your Word file via the Assignment Tool.
