Design a robot to with the ability to identify and retrieve certain cans at the request of customers in a supermarket. We were provided with a number of constraints and functions that our robot must have, as well as some requirements that would also be necessary.
Develop a design for this robot from the perspective of the motions functions it would need. As we were provided with a number of constrains and requirements, as well as others we came up with during the design process, this was a reasonable difficult task. We were required to conduct research into some of the possible tools and parts we could use that would be within our budget and ensure we were able to satisfy the brief. As a result, we came up with a general design for the majority of the robot and two versions of the mechanism that would collect the cans. Our first design was based on a ‘claw hand' to grab the differently coloured cans. This would require an RGB sensor to distinguish the cans based on their different colourings, a proximity sensor to ensure it would not collide with any obstacles, and a sensor to calculate the distance between the ‘claw hand' and the can. The cans would be collected by the hand and up to ten stored in a basket at any one time.

User interaction will begin and end at the same location, with the goal being to minimise the physical work that will be required by the customer.
Initially the customer will approach a digital interface on a computer to select the desired coloured cans. The interface used to accomplish this will be a series of buttons representing each color, with each press indicating an additional can added or subtracted from the order by the customer. Additionally, the interface will include a button to confirm the selection, which will allow the machine to begin its autonomous retrieval operation.
Upon arriving with each selected can, the machine will unload the cans at the same location that it departed from. The cans will be unloaded by the machine onto an elevated platform, allowing the customer to pick up each can with ease. At this point the machines operation will have concluded and it will reset its location and order numbers, awaiting a new request of cans.
