Question: Introduction:

Screen real estate is the amount of available working space that a digital device display provides to the user. It is where the user interfaces (UI) of applications will be displayed or presented to its user.

This web page shows more information on screen real estate: https://www.usabilityfirst.com/glossary/screen-real-estate/

A scenario in HCI is "an idealised but detailed description of a specific instance of human-computer interaction (HCI). By helping redress the balance between generality and accuracy in theories derived from cognitive psychology, this use of scenarios (1) allows the researcher to build on empirical findings already established while avoiding the tar-pits associated with the experimental methodology, (2) enables the researcher to consider a range of phenomena in a single study, thereby directly addressing the question of the scope of the theory, and (3) ensures that the resulting theory will be applicable in HCI contexts." (ACM CHI)

Instructions:

Work individually.

Design a UI for a tablet following this scenario:

"Meet Helen. She is a forestry researcher who is really meticulous, organized and likes technology. She has been using computers and electronic gadgets since she was 12. She doesn''t have a perfect (20/20) vision, so she has to wear reading glasses. Helen always needs to use digital equipment when she goes into the woods for collecting samples of soil and plants. She needs to be into the woods, far from the civilization, for a long time, between 1 and 2 weeks. She always needs precise measurements of the terrain, such as its altitude, local temperature and relative humidity. Let''s assume that Helen can get access to wireless Internet all the time and she always carries and uses a computer tablet."

The app must show the environmental data (Helen's measurements) described in the scenario all the time. Take into account the user characteristics, environmental conditions and technology capabilities for the UI design, so you will need to describe all those requirements in your report. Create one low-fidelity prototype (a wireframe). Use any of the software tools described in May 18's Powerpoint presentation for making the wireframe. You can also add notes onto the prototype. You can design a UI for any brand or model of an existing tablet. You must research its screen real estate, technical capabilities, etc. Remember, you are designing the app''s user interface (UI), not the tablet.

Use the 8 Golden Rules of Interface Design in your UI design.

Explain how you applied each of the 8 rules.

Submit a PDF report with the above (including a picture of your low-fi prototype (wireframe), descriptions, etc.) to CMS. Don''t forget to include your name to the report. A very simple report (e.g. half a page) is likely to get very low marks.
