Task

Design a tube and shell heat exchanger for the fluids and duty given for you and complete Project Management tasks as detailed below.

Project management tasks

Complete:

- A project scoping form. A short phrased piece of information covering:
o What is to be done
o Why it is to be done
o Value it provides if it is done

- Work Breakdown structure. Identify and sequence tasks.

- Gantt chart - based on the WBS (tasks, durations, and dependencies)

- Risk Assessment - based on the WBS (tasks, durations, and dependencies).

Design Assumptions:

• The overall pressure drop for each fluid should not exceed 10% of that fluid's inlet pressure.
• The hot fluid goes through the tubes, and the cold fluid through the shell.
• The design must include specification of the number of tubes required, and the number of tube passes. You need not go into detail as to the arrangement of baffles on the shell side.
• You may assume the use of tubes of the following specification: length 8.0 m, internal diameter 0.025 m, external diameter 0.027 m, material carbon steel.

• Assume shell-side heat transfer coefficient is a constant: h = 1500 W m K .

• Ignore contribution of fouling, and assume the tube itself has negligible resistance to heat transfer. Thus

3. What to hand in

The order of what you hand in is important.

i) Project management documents
- A project scoping form
- Work Breakdown structure.
- Gantt chart
- Risk Assessment

ii) Data sheet

You should present an absolutely clear summary of your input and output data, set out neatly on a single sheet of A4 paper (known as a data sheet), which will include:

- For both hot and cold fluid, a statement of flows, temperatures, pressures and all relevant physical properties (density, heat capacity, viscosity, thermal conductivity, Prandtl number,.... (others?).

- The heat load of the exchanger in Watt.

- The chemical engineering design of the exchanger in terms of number of tubes, heat transfer surface, passes, and heat transfer coefficient.

A typical shell and tube heat exchanger data sheet can be found on page 6.

iii) A neat sketch of the exchanger, with key dimensions (need not be to scale).
iv) A brief reference (2-3 lines) as to the main sources of data and design methods.

v) Calculations. Check fluid properties with another source/calculate. File your main calculations and if these run to more than 10 sides, please go through and precise them.Task

- Design task

- Design a shell and tube heat exchanger for the fluids and duty given to you.

- Data sheet (see page 6 of the hand-outs).

- A neat sketch of the exchanger, with key dimensions.

- A brief reference (2-3 lines) as to the main sources of data and design methods.

- Calculations.

- Any remarks/conclusions about the HX design.

- Project management documents.
