Communicating Research Assessment
Aim: The aim of this assessment is to allow students to design a research communication strategy for an existing research study.
Research project - Case study from Bua Province
Task Description: Students are asked to choose one research project from the list below:
1. Petrova, S., & Marinova, D. (2015). Using ‘soft' and ‘hard' social impact indicators to understand societal change caused by mining: A Western Australia case study. Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal, 33(1), 16-27.
2. Stevens, H. C., & Watson, D. M. (2022). Interacting impacts of drought and fire on bird populations-insights from a long-term study in the Warrumbungles. Australian Zoologist, 42(2), 608-630.
3. Pearson, J., McNamara, K. E., & Nunn, P. D. (2019). Gender-specific perspectives of mangrove ecosystem services: Case study from Bua Province, Fiji Islands. Ecosystem Services, 38, 100970.

Using the research project selected above, students are asked to design a research communication strategy using one of the approaches listed below:
1. A policy brief suitable for policy makers.
2. A media piece for The Conversation suitable for the general public.
3. A poster to report research findings at an academic conference.
Students will need to carefully consider who the intended audience is for their chosen communication approach and to appropriately shape the communication of the selected research study based on this audience. Students will need to consider aspects such as the level of detail included, the type of language used, and visual elements such as headings, subheadings, and images as these aspects will vary according to the intended audience of the approach selected. Please use APA (or similar) referencing style.
