Repeat the work of Widrow and Hoff on a pattern recognition problem from their classic 1960 paper [WiHo60]. They wanted to design a recognition system that would classify the six patterns shown in Figure P10.11.
These patterns represent the letters T, G and F, in an original form on the top and in a shifted form on the bottom. The targets for these letters (in their original and shifted forms) are +60, 0 and -60, respectively. (The values of 60, 0 and -60 were nice for use on the face of a meter that Widrow and Hoff used to display their network output.) The objective is to train a network so that it will classify the six patterns into the appropriate T, G or F groups.
What is the range of water content if the relative compaction (R.C.) is required to be 95% of the standard proctor γdmax?
he causes a static deflection δst of the floor under his feet. If he walks (or runs quickly!) in the same area, how many steps per second would cause the floor to vibrate with the greatest vertical amplitude?
Why is the test run in the dark (or in a black bottle)?
A pool player wants to bank ball B off of point A into the side pocket O. The ball has a diameter d = 2.25 in. and a coefficient of restitution e = 0.8 when colliding with the side of the table.
For FCC diamond cubic structures, give the lattice coordinates for the atoms found in the [100], [110], [111] direction? and Calculate the linear density of atoms in these directions for Ge.
Water flows through 800 feet of 12-inch diameter iron pipe (? = 0.0018 inches) between 2 open storage tanks, whose water surface elevation difference is 16 feet. The pipe entrance is flush and square edged
Two transmission belts pass over sheaves welded to an axle supported by a thrust bearing at B and a journal bearing at D. The sheaves A has a radius of 50mm, and the sheave at C has a radius of 40mm.
Knowing that the magnitude of P is 35 N, determine by trigonometry (a) the required angle a if the resultant R of the two forces applied to the support is to be horizontal, (b) the corresponding magnitude of R.
A vertical curve is to connect two tangents that intersect at station 30+50 at an elevation of 800.00 ft. The approach gradient is 3 percent and the departure gradient is -5 percent. The elevation of the curve at station 32+50 must be equal to at ..
A froth flotation process is used to concentrate copper ore. It is a two stage process with a rougher stage followed by a cleaner stage. The cleaner tailings are returned to the rougher flotation.
Determine the excess pressure inside an 0.5-in-diameter soap bubble floating in air, given the surface tension of the soap solution is 0.0035 lb/ft.
A series of Standard Proctor compaction tests was performed on a soil with a specific gravity of 2.68 with the following results: Determine: Maximum dry density; Optimum moisture content
