Assessment : Usability Testing
Background
You have now created the two storefront websites for a storefront in Brisbane: A public website with information about the organisation (assignment 2) and an internal website that members of the organisation will use for day-to-day management (assignment 3). For assignment 4, you are now tasked to perform usability testing on these websites.
This assignment is part of a running scenario for all assignments in this subject, where the Brisbane storefront will continue to be your client. Please also refresh your memory regarding the additional background information provided previously in Assignments 1-3.
Take care to plan your time well for this assignment, as we recommend getting academic feedback for Task 1, and Tasks 3-4 require input from your associates.
The tasks for the usability testing assignment are as follows.
Task 1: Questionnaire design
Design a questionnaire to conduct a heuristic review of the websites for Assignments 2 and 3 together. The questionnaire will have the following components:
(a) Front matter
The questionnaire will have a title, instructions for respondents, and text fields for contact details representing the respondent’s full name, relationship to usability tester, telephone, and email. The contact details will only be used if verification is needed.
(b) Questions
There will be ten questions. They can be phrased as either questions or statements relating to the following ten design guidelines:
i. Questions 1-8: Base on Kappel et. al. (2006, §§11.4.1–11.4.8) on response times, interaction efficiency, colours, text layout, page structure, navigation structure, multiculturality, and confidence-generating measures.
ii. Question 9: Base on Kappel et. al. (2006, §11.4.9) on consistency.
iii. Question 10: Base on Kappel et. al. (2006, §11.6.3) on accessibility.
(c) Quantitative responses
The responses to the ten questions include a quantitative component that uses a 5-point Likert scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree).
(d) Qualitative responses
The responses to the ten questions also include a qualitative component for recording reasoning and comments related to the questions.
(e) Language
The language of all parts of the questionnaire must be accessible towards average web users. I.e.:
The language must not be specific to a usability testing expert only.
(f) Electronic design
Since you are studying online, the questionnaire must be designed in a way such that it can be completed electronically in full. An optional suggestion for implementing this is to add form controls to your Microsoft Word document. These can be found in the Controls group of the Developer ribbon in Microsoft Word 2016.
(g) Special note
The remaining tasks of this assignment rely on having a well-designed questionnaire. Therefore, we recommend asking an academic to review a draft of Task 1 before proceeding to the remaining tasks. This is nevertheless optional.
Task 2: Questionnaire self-completion
Complete the questionnaire yourself in a separate copy of the document. All components must be filled out in full. We are also looking for insightful comments for the qualitative answers, which should each be 1-3 full sentences in length.
Task 3: Questionnaire first associate completion
Ask an adult family member, friend, colleague or any associate to complete the questionnaire in a separate copy of the document. Take a moment to introduce them to your work. Remind them to complete all components of the questionnaire in full.
Task 4: Questionnaire second associate completion
Ask another associate to complete the questionnaire in a separate copy of the document as per Task 3.
Task 5: Questionnaire statistical summary
Create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to present a statistical summary of the quantitative responses gathered in Tasks 2-4.
Create columns to record the Task 2 score, Task 3 score, Task 4 score, and the average score across columns.
Create rows for each design guideline.
Report the raw scores as integers and the average scores to 1 decimal place.
Task 6: Best aspect
Considering Task 5, which design guideline do you think has been implemented the best in your sites? Justify your answer.
Task 7: Second-best aspect
Considering Task 5, which design guideline do you think has been implemented second-best in your sites? Justify your answer.
Task 8: Worst aspect
Considering Task 5, which design guideline do you think has been implemented the worst in your sites? Justify your answer. Also explain what changes you would make to improve this?
Task 9: Second-worst aspect
Considering Task 5, which design guideline do you think has been implemented second-worst in your sites? Justify your answer. Also explain what changes you would make to improve this?
