Assignment - High level design for an SME network

Unit Learning Outcomes covered in this assessment The purpose of this assignment is to develop requirements and design a network, which can be implemented with LAN/WAN services for an SME (small and medium sized enterprises). The design of network and service must be specific so that it can be used for a purpose of a quotation and proposal from vendors.

After the assignment, students are expected to learn not only the knowledge and current technical aspects of advanced networking but also research, data collection, analysis and writing skills, which are very important and help them for study. Students will be able to understand what aspects and contents are required for requirements too.

The following ULOs are covered;

a. Model and critically compare LAN and WAN network technologies, topologies and implementation;
b. Configure, test and troubleshoot various network devices including routers and switches
c. Evaluate, different WAN protocols; such as HDLC, PPP, Frame Relay, DHCP, ISDN, NAT and PAT in a network environment, and configure, verify, troubleshoot related equipment;

Assignment Description

Tasks:

There are two parts to this assignment, i.e. part A and part B.

A. Investigate, design and develop a suitable network for an SME by addressing the following criteria. See detailed instruction in the next section.

B. Presentation

Part A description:

There are three (3) areas to consider for advanced network design in this assignment.

1. Design a network for an SME

2. Define and design LAN and WAN services for the users

3. Research LAN and WAN technologies
Contents must include:
  - Introduction
  - Scopes and Limitations
  - Requirements (Network parts and VPN service parts)
  - Solution Design
a. Logical Design
b. Physical Design
c. Network Topologies
d. Protocols and Technologies
e. IP addressing including IPv4 and IPv6
f. Security features and Policies
g. Redundancy and Failover plans
h. LAN and WAN services design andanalysis

Part B description:
