Assignment - Build an Azure Data Warehouse

Please review the instructions in the attached files. You need to know how to use and/or access Azure before you begin this project.

Design and Populate Data Warehouse -

You are ready to begin the process of loading data into your new data warehouse. This tutorial shows you how to use Polybase to load New York City taxi cab data from an Azure storage blob. For future reference, to learn how to get your data to Azure blob storage or to load it directly from your source into SQL Data Warehouse, see the loading overview.

Run the following SQL scripts specify information about the data you wish to load. This information includes where the data is located, the format of the contents of the data, and the table definition for the data.

Part 1. Create external tables and Schema for the sample data

Part 2. Load the data into your data warehouse

Assignment -

For the first part of your lab project, you will use the information below to Design a Data Warehouse (Schema) using Azure. To do so, follow the instructions given below.

Using Microsoft Azure

To create a warehouse in Azure, follow the steps in the following link below to design Data Warehouse using Azure portal and load New York Taxi Cab data using PolyBase and SQL Server Management Server.

Once You're Done

1. Provide a write-up including snapshots showing major steps accomplished. Snapshots of steps 3-8 under the "Create external tables for the sample data" section and snapshots of steps 1-2 under the "Load the data into your data warehouse.

2. Provide the output of the following system queries and statistics.

SELECT * FROM sys.dm_pdw_exec_requests;

CREATE STATISTICS [dbo.Date DateID stats] ON dbo.Date (DateID);

CREATE STATISTICS [dbo.Trip DateID stats] ON dbo.Trip (DateID);

3. Use any sample dataset of your choice (flat file) available on internet and repeat the above steps and provide the above items 1 and 2. For item 2, CREATE STATISTICS for at least two of the newly loaded tables.

Please note: When you follow the instructions for "Using the SQL Portal" below, you must wait until you see the Status change from Resuming to Online before closing your browser. It could take 2 to 4 minutes. Note - This tutorial loads the data directly into the final table. In a production environment, you will usually use CREATE TABLE AS SELECT to load into a staging table. While data is in the staging table you can perform any necessary transformations. To append the data in the staging table to a production table, you can use the INSERT...SELECT statement. For more information, see Inserting data into a production table.
