Question 1 - It is broken, let's fix it.

At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the transition to Working From Home Protocols (WFH) was sudden and fast for many organizations. A large organization here in Jamaica has decided that aspects of permanent remote work is the future of work for their organization. The management is, however, concerned that the current performance management system is not fit for this purpose and does not mirror that reality of WFH. They have decided to review the system and amend it to support working from home.

The organization is concerned because during the last 18 months there have been more employees complaining about being rated unfairly, supervisors question how to apply the establish ratings and formal appeals. There has also been fall from 97% to 70% completion of performance appraisals over previous years. HR suspects that supervisors have also become hesitant to rate staff. In a recent staff meeting several employees questioned the continued relevance of the behaviours and results being used.

The organization has a virtual project team working on the new changes to the system they are at the point of wanting to pilot test the new appraisal form, and results and behaviours. You are part of the project team responsible for communication planning to support the introduction of the revised system. The project team has until March next year to implement the new system. This will be in line with the new financial year.
