Question: You work for a large not-for-profit organisation, which is relocating its premises to another building. The main objective of this relocation is to merge several branch offices so that all employees are in the one location. The CEO would like to take advantage of this opportunity in a different way. She has become aware that the company has not been as efficient as it could be in terms of its energy use and production of waste. She will introduce many initiatives into the new premises, such as energy-efficient lights and recycling facilities. As well as being more environmentally friendly, she hopes to reduce costs for the company. However, the success of these initiatives in great part depends on the willingness of employees to act in an environmentally responsible way. She has noticed several undesirable habits of employees, such as unnecessarily printing off emails, leaving lights switched on in empty rooms, leaving computers on when they go out to lunch, and putting recyclables into general rubbish. In addition, most employees choose to drive to work in their own cars, despite other transport options (trains, cycling, walking) being available. Driving may create problems for employees, as parking is more limited in the new building.
Task: The CEO wishes to make environmentalism and efficiency more central to the organisation's mission. Design a behavioural change strategy that will encourage employees to act in a more environmentally responsible way and change their existing habits. You may wish to focus on some of the tactics for influence we learned about in the lecture, including:
1. Reciprocity
2. Social proof
3. Consistency and commitment
4. Liking
5. Authority
6. Scarcity
