HLTH 1038 Introduction to Public Health Practice and Research
Portfolio Task: Descriptive Epidemiology Exercise
In Week 5 and Week 6 of this course, you'll look at health data and descriptive epidemiology.
For this portfolio task, we want you to produce a short report which demonstrates your understanding of descriptive epidemiology.
First of all, pick one condition from the list below:
1. Hip fracture
2. Dementia
3. Poor oral health
4. Cardiovascular disease
5. Covid-19
Now, using any of the data sources presented in Section 5.3 of Week 5, write a report outlining the descriptive epidemiology of the condition you have chosen.
The full report should be a maximum of 500 words.
It should be succinct and clear and include the following information:
1. Use Australian data to report on:
1A: the prevalence and incidence of the condition
1B: the mortality and/or hospitalisation rates associated with the condition
2. Describe the condition in terms of person, place, and time factors. For instance, who is more likely to have the condition? How does it vary across different parts of Australia? How has it changed over time?
3. Comment on the consequences of the condition for individuals living with it. Are burden of disease measures available for this condition?
