ESSAY 1: Descriptive Analysis ~ Education & Learning

Overview: Describing and analyzing are central features of essay writing. Description is key in helping readers remember your argument and details as well as making your writing come to life.

Working with sensory detail and creating vivid descriptions will make almost any essay you write more persuasive and effective. Our first essay asks you to use description to make a physical place come alive for readers! This physical place must in some way tie into your education or the education of someone you know. Certainly one would think of schools and classrooms here, but feel free to expand your understanding of education to include places off campus and other formal settings. After hooking your reader with details, you will then apply analysis to break the place down into several parts that add further insight as to why your location is memorable. By the end, your reader will paint a picture of this special place and will understand its value.

Composing Advice: Through a first and third person perspective, you will compose a descriptive analysis of a place you feel has unique and memorable qualities. Again, this place must connect to your own education or the education of someone you know. Describe the location in rich detail and descriptive language. Then, analyze the location by breaking it into distinct parts to add further insight. Here are more prompts to consider: What does the interior, exterior, and surrounding area look like? How did this place make you feel then and now? Capture some emotions. Who were the important people? Recall how this place impacted your childhood, adolescent, or adult years. What did you experience then and now put into practice? Essay Guidelines:

1. To begin writing, consider some of the descriptive strategies we discussed in class such as scene versus summary, naming and detailing, and concrete and figurative language.

2. Describe key objects, scenery, actions, and/or people to help readers best understand this place and your purpose. Organize it logically, chronologically, or climactically.

3. In your essay, please have an identifiable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Elaboration is important, but keep focused.

4. Select those specific examples and concrete details so that your characterizations, scenarios, and evaluations are clearly conveyed.

5. The paper should be 4-4 ½ pages in length. It must be typed, double-spaced and in 12 point Times Roman Font.
