Assignment -
Overview - As a part of your duties as an operations or supply chain manager, you will have to work with quantitative analysts. You will be responsible for developing models for the managerial processes that you supervise. For this assignment, you will create your own problem, identify variables, and propose a model for everyday operations that would alleviate or eliminate the problem.
Your task is to define the problem and its variables. You do not have to quantify these variables or create an Excel Solver model. If you cannot find a problem within your company or job, you can select an example from a company that you are familiar with, such as a fast food restaurant, post office, bakery, logistics company, etc. The problems in your book, assignments, and learning documents (tutorials) should provide ample insight for determining the problem that you would analyze. If you cannot decide on a specific problem, please contact your professor for additional help.
Action items -
1. Choose a decision problem that you might encounter in your daily work similar to those we have seen in the overviews of this course. Some examples for such a business problem are as follows:
- Resource allocation
- Scheduling shifts
- Transportation and network problems
2. Create a four- to five-page document (APA style) containing the following parts:
a. Title page
b. Description of your problem
c. Description of the objective of this problem (minimize or maximize)
d. Description of the constraints of this problem
e. Definition of the variables and the relationships among the variables
f. Formulation of a model to facilitate the everyday operations that would alleviate or eliminate the problem
You should create a graphic that clearly explains your model and the relationship of its parts.
You should also include a description in your paper of the model and how it would help with the problem you identified.
g. References in APA format
Note: Your title page and references are not counted toward the document page length requirement.
