Scenario

A recent crime has stunned your community. A prominent physician and his office manager were arrested for fraud and abuse. The allegations include performing unnecessary services and submitting false claims for patients that were not seen. The physician's office staff are without jobs and some of the patients have hired lawyers to file lawsuits on their behalf. 

Alarmed by the news, you begin to think about Klein Multi-Specialty Clinic where you work as the office manager. The clinic is rather large and employs 15 physicians that specialize in different areas of medicine. The clinic also has its own lab and can perform its own radiology services. 

While you have a great program in place to monitor for fraud and abuse, you decide to use the news of the recent crime to remind all clinic employees of the consequences of participating in illegal activities. You send out an email with the news link and reminders on how the clinic monitors fraud and abuse. You have also decided to create a fraud and abuse infographic that will be placed in the breakroom, the offices shared by the medical staff, and the office shared by the medical coders and billing specialists.

• A description of the methods that are used to prevent fraud and abuse in healthcare. Explain why those methods are used.
