Tenochtitlan was the capital of the powerful Aztec Empire, one of the later Mesoamerican civilizations that were conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century.

In this description of Tenochtitlan, which would have been the largest and grandest city in the Americas in its time, discuss what aspects of its architecture and urban planning carries on earlier established traditions that were found throughout Mesoamerica for the past 2000 years.
