Question: Students will first complete the Cooper et al. (2020) reading for this module and then respond to the following discussion prompt:

Extinction is one of the most widely used techniques in reducing challenging behavior, but is often one of the more difficult procedures to implement or complete with fidelity. Often, parents, technicians, or teachers provide feedback to behavior analysts that it doesn't work, the behavior just gets worse, or that classmates cannot ignore the challenging behavior.

For this discussion, provide an example of an extinction procedure where the challenging behavior is maintained by positive reinforcement and another example of where the challenging behavior is maintained by negative reinforcement. From there, consider why extinction might be difficult to implement for each and what plans you would develop to ensure the intervention might be successful. Please remember to also include a description of replacement behaviors targeted for increase on both examples and the schedule at which you would reinforce these behaviors.
