Escalating to Relationship Conflict

Your own interpersonal conflicts often start as content conflicts but quickly degenerate into relationship conflicts; it goes from "you didn't come to our group meeting with your task completed to share" to "you obviously don't care about this group" - and that's when things get ugly. What might you do, as one member of a small group (such as a family, the employee group you work with, or a project group for a class assignment) to keep conflicts and their resolution focused on content and not escalate to relationship conflict?

In your initial post:

1. Describe a situation in a group setting which escalated from a content to a relationship conflict. (It's helpful if it is one that you were actually involved in, but it does not have to be; be sure it's a detailed and likely situation relevant to small group dynamics.) Include dialogue between the people involved, descriptions of nonverbal behaviors/messaging, how it impacts other group members, etc.

2. Realizing that another group member isn't likely to change their approach, discuss how you could change what you say and do (as one of the group members in your scenario) to influence a better outcome.
