Probability-Based Sampling:
Your proposal required only a non-probability sampling procedure. Referring back to sampling as discussed in Week 5, now consider how you might implement a probability-based sampling procedure, which issues would arise and which advantages this would have. Note that in your final report (Assignment 3), with the presentation of your findings you also need to propose a probability-based sampling procedure for a repeat (or extension or follow up) of your study (this study will not actually be conducte as it is beyond the scope of this unit).
Data collection preparation:
Whereas your Assignment 2 needed to propose a 'real' study for the Myer department store in Frankston (or another department store if you are based overseas) that would include up to 100 respondents, in practice in our unit you will be administering an adjusted (reduced) version of your questionnaire among fellow students only, who will role play being respondents (this will happen in Week 7).
Because your fellow respondents may not know the details of your case area, you need to write a separate instruction for them (see mini-task Question 2 below). The instructions need to explain to the test respondents 1) the relevant characteristics of the selected department store and 2) what type of person they should imagine being for the role play when completing your questionnaire. For example, if your study is on a department store in Hong Kong, then your test respondents need a short description of that department store so in their role play your test respondents can imagine having visited it. And if your study specifically focuses on young families, you need to explain that the test respondent should imagine being a young parent.
Prior to this Workshop, it is expected that you have gone through all the suggested pre-class and in-class study materials.
Your tasks for mini-task # 5:
Q1. By following the five steps of the sampling design process, discuss how you would propose to select respondents to participate in your proposed survey using probability sampling. Also provide a justification for why the selected method (either simple random or systematic random or cluster sampling) would be a suitable sampling procedure. This includes proposing an updated sample size and costing estimate for your project. To what extent would this provide better results than the non-probability sampling approach you had in your original study proposal?
(Hints: refer to the week 5 Moodle resources and chapter 9 of the prescribed textbook, also see lecture slides 13-20 for details). You are also advised to ask questions in the workshop session if in doubt).
Q2. Prepare the context and role descriptions for your simulated data collection as scheduled for week 7. The description should contain two parts (see also the details above):
a) a short description of the department store that will provide a relevant context for the test respondent when they fill out your questionnaire.
b) a short description of the type or customer or local resident that the test respondent should imagine representing when filling out your questionnaire (see details above).
