Assignment

Each class will divide itself into groups of at least five students and each group will choose one of the following topics:

Green buildings

Health and safety in construction Developments in fire-fighting equipment Technology in fire fighting
Safety on oil rigs

Equipment maintenance on oil rigs Embodied energy
Waste reduction

Occupational Health in Educational Establishments Renewable energy use in Oman

Students who have not joined a group by an agreed date 2019 will be placed in a group by the Module Tutor. Once the groups and the topic have been chosen or allocated, there will be no changes.

Step 1

The group will use the UCLan Library resources to find five articles on the chosen topic. These should be sent by email to your class tutor for checking.

Step 2

Each student will use the five articles to write a short literature review. The literature review process will be explained and discussed in class. Please note that only the articles that have been approved by the module tutor can be used for the literature review.

Step 3

As the literature reviews are being written, the group will come together again and devise between ten and up to twenty closed questions on the topic of the literature review.
Questionnaire design, sample groups etc will all be discussed in class.

Step 4

The questionnaire will be completed by the respondent group. Each student in the group will be responsible for an equal number of questionnaires.

Step 5

The group will come together again to compile results. These will be put in a table for inclusion in the final report.

Step 6

Each student will complete a report of between 750 and 1000 words. The report should be written in the third person and follow the structure outlined below:
1 Background

This section should define the subject of your research and areas that will be focused on during the research process.
2. Literature Review

An analytical discussion of the main points made in the articles.

3. The Questionnaire

A description and analysis of the process of the procedure of preparing, administering and compiling the questionnaire. This should include an assessment of the roles of different group members in the process.
4. Results Analysis

The table of results will be included as Appendix 1. This section is where the results are analysed.
5. Areas of Future Research

From the results in the previous section, areas of possible future research should be identified.
6. References

The five articles used for the literature review. These should be in Harvard Referencing style.
7. Appendix 1

A table of the final results which will be given to you by your Module Tutor.

Note 1 Questionnaires
The class will be divided into groups. Each group will develop questionnaire questions for use in their own group questionnaire.
The group will decide on the sample (ie the people who will answer the questionnaire) and will divide up the work of getting the questionnaires completed. The group will meet to compile the results. Your module tutor will arrange to have the results put into a table.
Note 2

The assignment will be uploaded onto the Blackboard. There should be no identification on the assignment as Blackboard will give each piece of work its own code and the work will be marked blind (ie the marker will not know whose paper is being marked). Do not include borders etc on the page. The submission must be in Word Format.

Examination

For this assessment, students are required to write at least 500 words under examination conditions.

The topic of the writing is unseen until students enter the examination room but is concerned with the module.
Previous questions have included:

What is the main difference between first year and second year work? What did you find most difficult about this year's work in OM2055?
What are the main challenges when working on a questionnaire?

Please note that these are not the questions that will be asked.

The written examination will be a question or questions connected to your experience in the module.

You can write in the first person and you should use a mixture of description and analysis to respond to the topic.
