In the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5:10, Jesus says, "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
1 - What people was Jesus describing who would find the Kingdom of God?
2 - Think of a person in our current communities who can be described by that passage. ("Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness.") Imagine a person who is "righteous" in this sense.
3 - What is that person's direct context, surroundings, and influencing powers around him or her? Name an ethical issue at play in his or her life.)
4 - Describe the person that you are thinking about and take a position that comes to mind as an issue surrounding the person you imagine, inspired by the words of Jesus.
5- Write down a claim that you believe about the people Jesus was lifting up in that passage. This can be one or two sentences that begin with the words, "It is my position that ____ should/ought ______ based on the Sermon on the Mount..."
6 - Defend your position with a list of two or three short "because" statements/phrases. Begin your phrase with the word "... because..." Use the Scripture or/and Stassen, Glen, and David P. Gushee, Kingdom Ethics: Following Jesus in Contemporary Context, 2003, Chp 6, to expand on your "because" statements.
