Assignment:

Respond to at least two peers describing how unions are perceived in today's workforce. Compare and contrast the benefits of union presence. Are they seen as an effective representative to employees? Peer 1 The roles of unions is to protect and promote the inter of the workers through collective bargaining. The effectiveness of the union managing employees concerns in the work place depends on who you ask.

In my opinion I believe its a 50/50 split. There are some advantages that unions assist like job security, grievance, improving work conditions, representation just to name a few but on the flip side the disadvantages of possible strikes, dues, inequality within the organization. I have worked for companies that had unions and others that do not. One of the things that I personally like about a union was the job security. I was a peace of mind knowing that the job couldn't get rid of you without having a grievance procedure. One of the things I didn't like was that pay increases were based on an agreement with management and not based on the merit of your work. Peer 2 What is the role of unions in the workplace? Unions help reduce income inequality.

The era when labor unions in the United States were strongest - from 1945 to 1980 - was the one era in modern American history when income inequality actually declined. Economists call that period "the Great Compression". How effective are unions in the workplace? Unions raise the wages of their members by 10 to 15 percent. Unions also improve fringe benefits and workplace procedures suck as retirement plans, workplace grievance policies, and predictable scheduling. These workplace improvements contribute substantially to middle-class financial stability and worker well-being. The difference between union and nonunion environment? Most companies are either unions or nonunions, which determines how the company creates policies and working conditions. Unions are workplaces that decide on company policy together, while nonunions are workplaces where the company owner decides on company policy.
