Child Development
You've learned a lot in the class about the physical, cognitive, and social development of children. Now is your chance to apply that knowledge, and hopefully have some fun doing it. You will be analyzing a video. These videos are part of a BBC series called "The Secret Lives of 4, 5, & 6-year olds"
1. Go to the page on Canvas titled "The Secret Lives of 5-year Olds"
2. Watch both episodes (Season 1, Episode 3 and Season 1, Episode 4)
3. Your task for this assignment is to analyze the two episodes and write a 3 page paper describing how the children in the video illustrates the various physical, cognitive, and social/emotional developmental skills that the children have acquired.
The children are all five-year olds, but as you'll see, development is not like baking a cake, some children are further ahead than others with respect to development.
4. You do not need to cover every aspect of development the video shows, however, some topics to consider are:
a. Moral reasoning, e.g. black and white thinking, moral imperatives vs. social conventions, distributive justice
b. Sex differences, e.g. sex-role stereotypes, gender identity
c. Language development e.g. use of inflections, overregularization, coherence of narrative
d. Logical reasoning, e.g. styles of play, counting and basic math skills
e. Gross motor skills, e.g. standing, walking, running, jumping, throwing, catching
f. Fine motor skills, e.g. drawing, coloring, cutting with scissors, eating
g. Peer relations, e.g. aggression (instrumental vs. hostile, physical vs. relational vs. verbal)
h. Family relations, e.g. sibling relations, parenting style, attachment
i. Psychosocial stages, e.g. trust, autonomy, initiative, industry
j. Self-esteem
5. You will be evaluated on your ability to clearly express the concepts you have
learned in class, and to apply them to these children you will see in the videos. You will also notice that there are psychologists watching the children and commenting on the
children's development. You may use these researchers comments to guide you but...in order to receive marks, you are going to have to also identify developmental milestones that the researchers don't discuss.
6. Your paper must be typed and double-spaced. Please use 12 pt. Times Roman or Helvetica as your font (because my eyes are old). Please include a title page or a header with your full name and the course section.
7. You are expected to use your textbook and class notes as references. You may use additional sources if you wish. If you do use additional sources, please provide a reference page as well.
