Case Study Assessment
You are required to complete a research-based case study assignment that is worth 20% of your overall grade. This assessment task encourages you to work in groups and explore accounting and accountability issues in society, using material outside the unit texts.
Your teacher will allocate groups and assign case studies to each group. All case studies have been uploaded to ilearn. The report, worth 15% of your overall grade, will be due in lesson 5.1, accompanied by a short teacher and peer evaluated presentation, worth 5% of your overall grade.
The case study
Eight recent and contested social/ethical/economic/environmental issues have been chosen for students to complete the case study assessment. After allocation of groups, your teacher will also allocate each group one of the eight case studies to research. This will be allocated randomly. Each case study represents an issue that has attracted media and debate and impacts/is impacted by multiple stakeholders and accounting and accountability.
In groups, students will present a report on their issue that address the following five key areas:
- Understanding and articulation of the issue;
- Describes the broader context of the issue, i.e. research outside of the article to articulate the ‘bigger' social issue/problem;
- Clearly identifies and evaluates the stakeholders that impact and are impacted by the issue;
- Draws a parallel between the issue addressed in the case study and accounting and/or accountability;
- An analysis/critique of the issue that clearly identifies the groups' position and debate on the issue based on the link to external research, accounting, accountability and responsibility and any other relevant themes, such as human rights or global politics.
Report presentation
- Must be accompanied by a completed Assessment Cover Sheet
- Title page, including group member's names and and a title that identifies the relevant case study allocated to the group and issue (this does not have to be the title of the allocated article).
- Four pages of content - students are allowed 4 pages to present their issue, analysis and conclusions - i.e. address the five key areas. Headings are to be used to allocate each new theme or section, text should be double-spaced and NO smaller then size 12 font, margins should be 2.5cm all around, page numbers must be given, pictures can be used and must be referenced, and finally, in-text referencing/citations must be used, e.g. "Perkiss (2015) argued..." or "Accounting is fun" (Perkiss, 2015).
- A full reference list is to be provided as the final page of the report and should be completed in accordance with the Harvard referencing system. You will need at least 5 references, including the article, to sufficiently answer the questions.
- The report presentation will also take place in Lesson 5.1. Each group member must present/speak. The presentation should go for approximately 5 minutes. The teacher will stop the presentation if it exceeds 7 minutes. Be creative in your presentation. You are encouraged to use PowerPoint slides (bring this on a USB), handouts, roleplaying etc. to communicate your case and engage your peers.
