Question: Dr. McCarthy lists and describes 10 language-based actions we can all use in our communication to adjust perceptions of First Nations Peoples. (And it is worth noting that everything she says can be applied to other marginalised people as well.) But she begins her talk by explaining that "Health is Wholistic" and that "our relationships have a big role to play in how healthy we are." Relationships, she adds, are directly connected to how we communicate and how we share information. Now, in this week's discussion, I'm asking you to take some risks and tell us about your experiences with prejudice and discrimination, or unconscious bias, and/or an 'ism.' You do not have to deal with racism or Racism, but you could expand your comments toward gender issues, religion, sexual orientation, appearance, or anything that relates to identity.
You might speak from different perspectives, including (but not limited to) being a recipient of the 'ism,' being an agent of an 'ism,' or even tell us of a moment of personal insight into your own unconscious bias, we will discuss as a group in class as well, but feel free to share in the discussion board.
