I think that the Supreme Court allowing for civil commitment of sex offenders even past the expiration of their prison sentence is a valid decision. I say this because although these offenders may claim to be rehabilitated and that they may integrate back into society somewhat, it is important to keep tabs and make sure repeat offenses do not happen. It is possible that this power may be abused and keep these criminals over their sentence length but hopefully with the data revolution, more stats and data can be used for predictive policing and keeping the offenders from reoffending. I think the question "Does the protection of society justify an extreme measure?" is essentially asking if the ends justify the means. I think yes. Law and due process still need to occur but so does protection.
