Case Study: This paper is designed to help the student identify, incorporate, integrate, and apply course concepts of a generalist model of practice to a specific case. Students will examine principles and concepts underpinning the generalist model as it applies to understanding the human condition and the interrelationship of the bio-psycho-social-cultural domains in understanding individual functioning. The paper will explore the role of traditional/alternative paradigms while articulating one's perspective on individual functioning by applying theories of identity development covered to date in this course. In this assignment, you will write a critical analysis that consists of approximately 5-7 typed, double-spaced, pages (excluding title and reference page). You will address the following set of questions in your paper and you will provide supporting evidence from the provided case study along with appropriate references to the corresponding course readings. TOTAL: 200 points
Structure of Assignment:
STEP 1: Review and analyze the case study provided by your instructor. You may work as a group but you must write your own analysis to the following questions. There are many ‘right' ways to look, apply and analyze--the key is in how you present your thoughts from a critical perspective.
STEP 2: Address the following questions in your discussion. Be sure to integrate course references to strengthen your arguments.
Question 1. Examination/Application: Use any theory to describe your understanding of the client's presentation and present level of functioning. Use examples from the case to show how the theory applies.
Question 2. Application: Using specific examples, describe how this case portrays traditional and alternative paradigms related to diversity, systems of oppression, privilege, culture, and intersectionality including the variables of race/ethnic identity development, gender and sexuality, and socioeconomic class.
Question 3. Critical Thinking: Discuss relevant risk and protective factors of the client that may influence his/her identity development and sense of self. This includes meso and macro level risk and protective factors.
Question 4. Integration: Select and integrate one peer-reviewed journal article that examine interventions and/or evidence-based frameworks for addressing the diverse needs presented in the case into your discussion.
Question 5. Synthesis/Reflection: Using the case study as a reference, discuss why this process of applying theory, applying a bio-psycho-social-cultural analysis is important for generalist social workers. This should include a discussion of the role of risk and protective factors, understanding paradigms, intersectionality, and systems of power and oppression.
