Background Rules of the Road for Writing Driving Research Questions
There are certain practices to avoid when crafting the driving research question:
Do not ask a yes/no question. Questions starting with can, should, do, etc., are not to be used as the question needs to be doctoral research worthy for a scholar-practitioner.
Do not ask a question with an obvious solution. (That has happened before.) There should be multiple factors compounding the problem such that a good solution is difficult to identify.
Do not ask overly broad questions. Limit the scope of the study to what is doable. Instead of finding a solution for the world, begin with the organization, and then it may have some generalizability.
Do not ask a compound question (i.e., two questions joined with "and" or another conjunctive). A quality doctoral research question will be robust and focused.
Do not ask multiple questions. Only one driving research question should be asked. It will be subdivided into guiding research questions later.
Do not ask a hypothetical or only theoretical question. The ADP is distinct from a dissertation. A scholar-practitioner approach is needed.
Read each research question. Identify if the question is correct or incorrect for use in a scholar-practitioner applied doctoral project study. Explain why.
