Assignment

Find an article or news story about some whistleblowing situation. Do not use high-profile cases like Snowden or Manning. If you can find the same story described by different sources all the better. Do not use some personal experience unless it was discussed in credible new sources. I need to be able to verify the account.

Then, using the worksheet discusses the case. Specifically, after telling me a sentence or two about the case, you will identify all of the key stakeholders and how you feel they were negatively impacted. For example, if someone released company records and emails to blow the whistle, discuss whose emails and how the information led to actions against them. If no one was negatively impacted, then why use it for this case study?

Discuss the final outcome (see directions) and most importantly, use your moral compass to describe or explain why you feel someone's actions were morally wrong. Again, if there was no wrongdoing, why was some whistle blown?

Finally, imagine you are in a leadership position. What could you reasonably do to keep the situation from happening again, to prevent the need for someone to feel a need to blow the whistle? Depending on the situation, you may feel the real wrongdoer is the whistleblower. If so, then describe why what the company/government did or is doing is justified, again using your moral theories.

Worksheet

Question A. Briefly what happened? Summarize the case.

Question B. Key Stakeholders and how they were negatively impacted: Discuss at least 4 major stakeholders (not stockholders, though the stockholders may be stakeholders). For each stakeholder, briefly explain the relationship with the company - why they are stakeholders and how were they impacted? You may use bullet points to summarize each stakeholder.

Question C. What was the final outcome? Include specific details such as prison, fines, termination, and for how many individuals. Make sure to cite your facts.

Question D. Describe why you feel someone's actions were morally wrong? Using ethical systems discuss why these behaviors were morally right or wrong. Be sure to use keywords describing your moral base (consequentialist, care, duty, act utilitarian, prima facie duties, etc.) and why your compass would justify classifying the action as morally right or wrong. Be sure to document the resource(s) you use for the definition of the moral theory or theories.

Question E. Put yourself in a position of leadership: Describe what you would put in place that would have prevented this in the first place or keep it from happening again. Or, alternatively what rules would you would implement to justify the action. Discuss rules in the context of your leadership philosophy or ethical standard.
