This is a three-part discussion board designed to detail dressings, drains, and catheters used on the surgical patient. Dressings are applied by the surgical Technologist at the end of the procedure. The Surgical technologist will also assist the surgeon with catheters and drains intraoperatively. Therefore, it is imperative that a Surgical technologist understands the diverse types and materials as well as the theory for use.

In my post I will first select a surgical procedure in a specialty, such as general surgery (open appendectomy), orthopedics (total hip replacement), OBGYN (Cesarean section) ENT (middle ear surgery via mastoid bone), Plastics (breast reconstruction) Neurosurgery (craniotomy or spine procedure), etc. These are only a few examples of the possibilities of procedures I can research and select for this discussion board.

From my research about the procedure I have chosen, select a commonly used drain that may be placed, describe what the drain is called, how it is used, common placement (anatomy). Describe how drainage volume is collected and measured.

What dressings will be used for your selected procedure? Describe the various layers of these dressings (if there are any layers), what the dressings are made of (materials). What are those specific dressings used for as it relates to this procedure?

Define and discuss one type of catheter that could be placed in the patient having this procedure.

List the exact name of this catheter, what it is used for, how drainage volume is collected and measured (if it is). How is the catheter placed (list anatomy)?

All three parts will be in one post.
