Assignment: Vitamin C & Sodium
Name the food items we get them from and/or how it's produced in the body.
Citrus, fruits, berries, and peppers are a couple good sources that are high in Vitamin C. Your body uses vitamin C to make collagen, which holds bones, muscles, skin, and other tissues together
Sodium is found in lots of food sources such as, pizza, chicken, soups, burritos, salads, etc. Sodium is produced by the food we eat and plays a key role in the normal nerve and muscle function.
Question 1: Describe what our body does with your choice of vitamin and mineral.
All bodily tissues need vitamin C, commonly known as ascorbic acid, to grow, develop, and heal. It has a role in a variety of bodily processes, including the production of collagen, iron absorption, immune activity, wound healing, and the conservation of cartilage, bones, and teeth.
Most of the body's sodium is located in blood and in the fluid around cells this helps to keep blood flowing at a constant rate. By regulating the amount produced in the urine, healthy kidneys ensure that the body's sodium level remains constant.
Question 2: Explain what happens if we don't get enough of that vitamin and mineral.
Lack of vitamin C may be a factor in cases of anemia, arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, cancer, chronic fatigue, depression, and many others. The lining of your lungs become weaker allowing in bacteria which can cause infections like pneumonia. Bones become weaker due to the lack of collagen and/or scurvy may also occur which is easily bruising, easily bleeding, and joint and muscle pain
The main issue in many cases for sodium levels to drop is that there's too much water in the blood. Extreme loss sodium can cause hyponatremia, which can trigger symptoms like muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness or even shock, coma, and death. When sodium levels fall, your nervous system cannot operate properly, which will result in headaches.
