Please choose two of the following three question topics. Try to think small and illustrate your point of view clearly. Use of specific examples is necessary. Quality not quantity is the requirement. 400 words for each topic you choose. They essay-formats answers should be typed-up (double space) and clear of grammatical errors.
Question A
Describe what makes a poem epic. Using specific example from Gilgamesh and the Odyssey define, discuss and illustrate the most important characteristics of the genre.
Question B
Examine some of the many scenes of hospitality in the Odyssey. Detect the similarities and differences between them. What is significant about these differences? What commentary does each episode offer concerning the responsibilities of guest and host, such as gift-giving, nourishment, entertainment? What is the relationship between this motif and the offensive situating in Odysseus' place during his absence?
Question C
What is Ithaca? A destination? A state of mind? Both? Explain the importance of Ithaca as a destination for Odysseus, but also as a symbol of completion and fulfillment that has influenced literature (poetry and verse) ever since. Provide with specific examples (from The Odyssey but also from other literary texts) to define Ithaca. A brief research on the topic is a must if you are going to answer this question. Additionally you should consult Chapter 12 ("Return from Ithaca") in Hall's The return of Ulysses.
