Problem: The sea otter is a keystone predator in the Pacific coastal kelp ecosystem, primarily because it is a major predator of sea urchins that eat kelp as their main food supply. A healthy kelp forest is highly diverse, with many species of fish and invertebrates living among (and dependent upon) a dense kelp forest.
Thought experiment: In what starts as a healthy pristine kelp forest ecosystem on a Catalina-sized island with many otters, imagine a disease kills off 90% of the sea otters (the rest are resistant to the disease). Note that otters have a relatively low potential population growth rate (one pup per year, mature in about 3 years), but urchins and kelp have much higher potential population growth rates. Assume no further disturbances to the ecosystem.
Required:
Question 1: Describe what happens in the subsequent early few years, specifically changes in (i) urchin population density, (ii) kelp population density, (iii) the local Shannon Biodiversity Index of the animals. Be sure to briefly explain what change you predict and why the changes occur, using a sentence or two for each.
Question 2: Extend your time frame to cover the next 5-25 years, for the same (i) - (iii) above, and now include (iv) otter population density. Be sure to briefly explain your answers.
