Problem

Addiction professionals are the guiding force in a client's treatment process. Frequently, clients require services beyond the scope of an addiction treatment program. Assessing client needs and then working with both client and community resources to help the client achieve their treatment goals often requires the addiction professional to refer to other agencies. For this discussion, do the following:

1. Briefly describe a situation where you referred a client for a mental health evaluation.

2. Describe your selection of the provider and your communication with the provider.

3. Describe what factors entered into the selection of this provider.

4. Describe how you explained the referral process to your client. If you have not had an opportunity to make a referral at your internship site, explain how the agency policy would facilitate that process.

5. Describe how you would evaluate the effectiveness of this referral. Provide all references.
