Indicate and describe what ESL or Bilingual Program (Program Model) is used in the classroom (Pre- K)

Provide specific information about the students' background (age, cultural, linguistic, socio-economic status, etc.).

Observe the classroom environment. Does the environment encourage students to care for one another, be responsible for each other, and collaborate? For example, is the classroom design a safe and welcoming classroom environment where students respond cognitively and emotionally to classroom aesthetics? Are there moveable chairs and desks, and ample space to highlight student work and cultural artifacts? Do you feel that the students know that the classroom space is theirs to create together? Why? Why not?

Does the teacher provide consistent routines that help students feel valued and safe, and accountable to one another? Are there opportunities for ELLs to use their home language? Do you think that the curriculum values native languages, cultures, and experiences of students? Provide examples.

Culturally responsive teaching is an approach that is student-focused. It identifies not only the differences between students but the unique strengths of each child to encourage their academic achievement and sense of belonging in the classroom. Are there any activities in the classroom that don't benefit all students? What activities seem to engage all students and get them participating? What actions have you noticed seem to get the best reactions out of the students?

Interview a teacher. In order to prepare for the interview, create 3-5 questions for an informal interview with the teacher. Your questions should be related to culturally responsive classroom and curriculum. Keep your interview notes to use when writing your essay. (Mrs. Pielet has her masters in education and a ESL endorsement).

  1. Compare your observations and information collected from Milestones 1 and 2. Do you think that this classroom reflects and represents the diversity of the community and school that it belongs?
  2. What recommendations would you make or strategies that you would implement to help this classroom become more culturally responsive? You should justify your recommendations by using reading materials or articles you may find based on theories learned in this course. Please make sure to use in-text citations to provide clear connections!
  3. Reflect back on all observations and data collected and in an Essay format (3 to 6 pages) or PowerPoint Presentation write a report summarizing your findings and recommendations. Provide pictures of the classroom (e.g., the classroom itself, materials, charts, books, etc.) to better support your findings.
