For this week's discussion board, I want you all to be as creative as you can and create your own religious movement that contains these five components.
Make sure you describe what each component of your religious movement is. Also, keep in mind, that when sociologists study religion and contempporary religious mvoements, they are not examining the beliefs of the religion, but rather how culture affects religous movements and how religious movements affect culture.must include the following.
1. Belief - Each movement must have at least one central belief in which the religion is grounded. In Christianity, for , one belief is that Jesus is the son of God.
2. Myth - A myth is a story passed down among members that is usually used to explain a belief. One Jewish myth is the story of the candle that stayed lit in the temple for eight nights despite only having enough oil for one night (which is where the eight night of Hanukkah come from).
3. Ritual - A practice that is repeated on an interval basis as a profession of faith. In Islam, followers pray five times a day facing Mecca.
4. Leadership - Leaders of religious movements can either be founders of the faith, such as Mohammad, or current church leadership structure, such as a Pastor in a Baptist Church.
5. Symbol - Most religious movements create a symbol which joins a community together. Christians have the cross or even the fish to symbolize their faith.
These components of religion are almost always present in some degree in every religious movement.
