(a) Describe THREE (3) types of value conflicts. Identify the type of conflict faced by Mariam and examine its impact on her job satisfaction.
Mariam is a newly qualified nurse at a community hospital. She likes to help people and had aspire to be a nurse at a very young age. She works in the palliative ward with four other nurses supervised by a Head Nurse. The ward comprises 30 patients. Mariam strongly believes that terminal patients need much emotional support and regularly spend time chatting with them. After a month, she was reprimanded by Head Nurse for not prioritising her work tasks and help out within the ward, instead chatting with patients. Due to her behaviour, her fellow nurses had to cover her duties while looking after their own assigned patients.
Gail is one who easily blend into social situations. Her friends describe her as being sensitive and have a knack for knowing what to do or say with each person. Her boss perceives her to be flexible, adaptive and shrewd at managing customers. She is able to read their non-verbal behaviours and change her behaviours to suit the situation. Tim is the direct opposite of Gail. His behaviour is consistent and principled, sometimes to the extent of being inflexible. He hardly attends to social cues and rarely conforms to the prescribed norms. His boss perceives him to be straight-forward, predictable and dependable.
(b) Describe the concept of self-monitoring, and discuss how Gail and Tim differ on this personality characteristic with illustrations from the case.
