Assignment: Education & Teaching
Part I
Implicit bias is the concept of holding unconscious attitudes toward others or associating stereotypes with them. The implicit bias may counter actual conscious beliefs without us realizing it. Implicit bias can exist when approaching assessments with children.
GCU's Statement on the Integration of Faith and Work states that "we have resolved to carry out our work within the public arena with compassion, justice, and concern for the common good" as well as "serving others in ways that promote human flourishing." Consider these components of the GCU Statement on the Integration of Faith and Work when researching and reflecting on the effect of bias on your future professional practice.
Using the topic Resources and your research, write a 500 to 750 words essay on implicit bias and ethical practice in early childhood assessment. Include the following in your essay:
Question 1. Describe three types of bias that can affect assessment and data analysis in education.
Question 2. How does implicit bias affect observation, assessment, data collection, and data analysis?
Question 3. Describe one type of bias you are now aware of that has influenced the way you thought, felt, or behaved toward young children.
Question 4. How can early childhood educators ensure their observations and assessments are being done ethically to reduce bias?
Question 5. Why is it important to implement accommodations in assessments for students with exceptionalities? How does this support ethical assessment practices?
Question 6. Support your essay with a minimum of 2 resources.
Question 7. Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is/is not required.
Part II
Determining how to collect and utilize data during the assessment process is a key role in developing instruction to support learning. More importantly, an educator must also be aware of implicit bias that might affect the results of an assessment. This assignment will provide insight into the process of determining whether the assessment data is free from bias, and how to use the collected data to determine the next steps for student learning.
Allocate at least 5 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Collaborate with your mentor teacher to create or identify an assessment that you will administer to the whole class or a group of students. This could be based on developmental or academic skills the students are currently working on in class. Following the administration of the assessment, work with your mentor teacher to analyze the data collected and identify 2-3 students with areas of academic or developmental concern.
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
Following the assessment administration and data analysis, write a 250 to 500 words summary that includes the following:
1. Description of assessment administered
2. Summary of the data analyzed with your mentor teacher.
3. Identification of 2-3 students, including a description of the academic or developmental concerns based on data. (Use pseudonyms when discussing specific students.)
