Read the Case Study
Anthony, a STEM student, has been doing very well academically. He has a 4.0 GPA and has been attending all his classes. He has been a diligent student who was never late for class. Recently things have changed. Anthony has been arriving late and missed his last class. He has isolated himself from his friends in the class, and he looks unkempt. He seems to have lost weight and now does not participate in class anymore. His friends Jasmine, Juan, Michelle, and James, are concerned.
Jasmine: I heard that Anthony is living in his car. He parks it in the back of campus and sleeps in it late at night. He moves it to different campuses, and now it is not working at all, and he does not have the money to fix it. I pick him up when I can. I found out he is showering in the campus gym. I am really concerned about him. I wish there were something I could do, but I am a single mother and am struggling myself.
Juan: I noticed those things too, Jasmine. I have tried to speak to him, but he just clams up. I know he recently aged out of foster care. He told me he has tried staying in homeless shelters, but he has not found one where he feels comfortable. I know that there are some resources on campus, but I do not know where to go. And now I believe he is getting very depressed! That is why he has started to avoid you. He avoids me as much as he can too!
Michelle: I spoke with him recently, and he said that he is concerned about paying for college next term. He does not know how to go about paying for college now that he is living in his car. He does not have his foster family to help him anymore. I know that the office of financial aid exists, but I am a dual-enrolled student, so I have not had much interaction with financial aid yet. I am not sure how to help him get the help he needs.
James: He should never have left his foster home. I heard that there might have been some problems there, but he should have stuck it out! At least he was getting decent meals. Now, he does not seem to be eating regularly. I buy him lunch when I can, but he is proud and often will not take it. I know that there are places that he can get food, but without an address, I am not sure he can get it. He needs help!
