Discussion Post: Generalist Practice
To Prepare: Read the following case study.
A 25-year-old man, father of two children (1 and 3 years old), comes to a parent conference with you, a social worker, during parent's day at the Head Start Center. During the course of the meeting about his children's progress, he reveals that he and his wife argue a lot. He says that she won't stop arguing once she starts and that when he tries to walk away, she pursues him, yelling. He indicates that in those situations, he becomes enraged. He reveals that on several occasions he has pushed her and once he punched her in the face, breaking her nose. He states that he is not a violent person and that he does not want to hurt his wife. He tells you that he cannot get her to stop following and yelling when he tries to walk away to calm down. He suspects she may be abusing her pain medication that was originally prescribed for an abscessed tooth. He is worried that the relationship may end in a separation, and he wants to discuss the effect this arguing may be having on his children's behavior at Head Start.
