QUESTION: In "Space Security: What are the Threats," Todd Harrison describes threats to U.S. Space Systems and considerations if they were to be employed. The examples he uses are the Chinese anti-satellite (ASAT) missile and the Russian airborne laser. Additionally, he discusses four strategic lines of effort to bolster space-related deterrence.

1) Harrison identifies a dilemma if an adversary were to use a weapon against U.S. space systems, since no one but the U.S. would know of the attack. If we protest it, we provide battle damage assessment to our adversary; but if we do not protest it, we have no public grounds for responding to it. Which of these two options do you think would be preferable in terms of U.S. national security? Why is this?

2) Which of the four space deterrence lines of effort described by Harrison do you think offers the most value to U.S. national security? Why is this, and what is the value? Support and defend your answer using materials from the self-paced courses.
