Submit a 300 or 350 word reaction to the documentary on Grand Valley Prison.
National Film Board, Zammit, S. (producer and writer) (2005) Life inside out. 73 min.
This documentary takes us to Grand Valley Institution for Women. The name obscures the fact that it is a federal prison. Inmates have been sentenced to two ears or more. Four women (Kim, Pearl, T.A. and Judy) tell us about the frustrations of getting parole, experiencing undeserved discipline etc. The film shows us the living conditions of female inmates (called residents?). It also tells us Something about how they explain their crimes and experience living in prison. There are no orange jumpsuits here.
a) describe this federal prison and perhaps compare its living conditions with your own,
b) explain how Kim and T.A. externalized responsibility (blamed others) for their crimes,
c) summarize what most interested you in what you saw and heard, and
d) tell us what you would like to see changed, or retained, in this prison.
