PICOT Statement and Question

Identifying a nursing issue or problem in any hospital setting is the start of implementing change. A PICOT question is developed by using nursing research in addition to evidence based practice to resolve the target issue or problem. The format to preparing the PICOT question is as follows:

P (Population of Focus): Mechanically ventilated patients
I (Intervention): Intermittent sedation/Sedation breaks
C (Comparison): Intermittent sedation compared to continuous sedation
O (Outcome): Decrease the number of use in mechanical ventilation days and a decrease in hospital expense
T (Time): Decrease the number of days by 15% and a drop in hospital expense and mechanical ventilator days from the time of admission

Question

In mechanically ventilated adult patients, will intermittent sedation compared to continuous sedation decrease the number of use in mechanical ventilation days by a percentage and drop in hospital expenses and decrease in mechanical ventilator days from the time of admission?
