Phonology Homework -
Problem 1: English spelling
Give the IPA symbol for the consonants represented orthographically by the underlined letters, and then provide the articulatory description for that sound. Your descriptions should include voicing, place, and manner. For example, vote would be [v]: voiced, labiodental, fricative.
In addition, please do the following:
(A) Describe the vowel [u] in phonetic terms, and give at least 4 examples of words which use different letters to spell this sound in English.
(B) Choose another sound of English, describe it in phonetic terms, and give at least 3 examples of words which use different letters to spell that sound in English.
Problem 2: Transcription
Transcribe each of the following words using the IPA. The transcription should correspond to your own pronunciation of these words, as spoken in more-or-less casual speech. You should also make a note about where you grew up. If you're not a native speaker of English, transcribe these words as they're spoken in the northern California area. Don't forget to mark stress and other phonetic detail.
