Scenario: Max and Jacquie
Jacquie is a parent who supports her son Max. Max has a mild intellectual disability and works part time at the local post distribution centre. Jacquie packs his lunch, drives him to and from work each day, cooks his dinner and does most of the housework. Max does help to keep his bedroom tidy.
Lately Jacquie has noticed how much Max has matured in the last year since he left school and wants to encourage Max to do more things for himself. Max loves his job; he has made some friends there and the workplace is very supportive. Jacquie has had a couple of job offers and really wants to return to work part time. She feels it's time for her to do something more for herself and wants to encourage Max to be more independent, expand his social network and participate more in recreational activities.
Jacquie has contacted a community support service to access some support for Max and help with her transition back to work. She would really like someone to help with housework and have someone teach Max some domestic skills, especially cooking.
Jacquie has spoken with Max about her plans to return to work part time. She tells Max she is feeling excited about going back to work and how Max can start being more independent now. She tells him about the support worker visiting and how this will help them. Max seems a little hesitant about a stranger in the house and says he doesn't want anyone helping him except mum. Jacquie discusses this with him and says how this would help them a lot and would give him a chance to go out with his friends more often.
A support worker has been organised to visit twice a week to assist with some housework first and then figure out what type of support can be provided for Max.
