Paper - Protest Movements
We have studied numerous movements for social rights and racial justice throughout the semester. Youth, students, workers and communities have played major roles in these accomplishments, including the establishment of Ethnic Studies programs and departments. Similarly, critical race theory recognizes the contributions of "the unique voice of color." For our final paper we will look at what rights, racial justice or other accomplishments have been secured or accomplished through protest movements. You may choose a protest movement we have studied in class and take a closer look, or you may choose from past or present movements.
Question 1: Describe the time, setting, and conditions for the protest. Identify groups involved in organizing the protest. Why did the group protest? What were the (stated) goals of the group? What challenges did the group face? What criticism or statements were said against the protesters?
Question 2: Address issues of race, racism, class, gender, and intersectionality. How do different communities come together for a common cause? In other words, describe in detail moments of solidarity? Also, what concepts, themes or terms we've studied in class intersect with your topic?
Question 3: Conclude describing what outcomes came of this movement? Did it spread? What is the movement's legacy; what rights do we enjoy today because of this struggle?
