Assignment:

Local, state, tribal, and international law enforcement regularly use the FBI's Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), which contains records for around 73 million criminal suspects. IAFIS is increasingly used to assist in the resolution of unsolved cold cases as well.

The crime: Following a vicious attack and stabbing, Carroll Bonnett was found dead in his house in 1978 in Omaha, Nebraska by responding officers. At the scene, they discovered numerous pieces of evidence, including palm and finger prints. They also discovered a message the suspect had left, which stated, "I have one clue to help me solve this crime. Get it on your own. DIE, PIG." The victim's car was stolen by the suspect, but it was later located and its prints were also discovered.

Determine whether you could obtain fingerprints from the following objects using the knowledge you have (handwritten letter, newspaper, cigarette, bloody blanket next to body, recovered car, and sink). Then specify how you would gather the prints on the scene from the listed items of evidence.

The investigators reviewed the evidence because a fingerprint match alone is insufficient justification for an arrest.

Describe the tests that forensic scientists could run on two pieces of evidence to further connect the suspect to the crime.
